The price of a website generally depends on how big it is, the features it needs to have, and how many other freelancers are involved. When it comes down to it, it’s relatively simple. You have two options:
Off-the-Shelf, meaning we take a pre-existing WordPress theme, configure it to your liking and within the capabilities of the theme, and populate it with your content. Because there’s no real development or design involved, such a site can be had purely for the cost of the labor involved.
Fully Custom, meaning we create a design inspired by your brand and then I convert that design into a handcrafted installation that is uniquely yours. This involves bringing in a visual designer and potentially other freelancers from my network and is substantially more expensive than tailoring something off-the-shelf.
It’s kind of like buying a suit or dress for your wedding. Off-the-rack is always cheaper than something tailormade; the question is whether your digs will suit the occasion.
What About Hybrid Approaches?
There are other approaches out there—for example, using third party page builders like Elementor to accelerate development, or a hybrid approach where a developer takes an off-the-shelf theme and hacks it into submission.
I don’t do that sort of work, however. I’ve never been a fan of half measures. My experience has been that the hybrid approach results in technical debt that eventually becomes impossible for clients to overcome. Money gets wasted, and frustration mounts. Ultimately, I find these same disgruntled clients at my doorstep, looking for a custom solution.
On FiXed Fee Vs. Hourly
I offer predictable, fixed-fee pricing. Because I have the development process down to a science, we don’t have to resort to black magic when it comes to pricing. After I’ve had the opportunity to learn about your needs, I put together an estimate with line-item pricing that shows the expected hourly effort that goes into each item (although at the end of the day, you only pay the total flat fee), so you can decide what’s worth the expense and what’s not. These figures don’t come out of thin air, either: they’re the result of a series of well-tested formulas that reflect, at a granular level, how well I’ve honed my craft.
Comparing Provider Pricing
Here’s a quick primer on what to expect with pricing when it comes to different types of web design service providers. There are three types of providers out there—full service agencies, studios or boutiques, and independent freelancers—each of which operates in dramatically different cost tiers.
Full Service Agencies
Budgets typically exceed hundreds of thousands. The cost comes from overhead and the many middle managers necessary to coordinate all the third parties involved in producing end-to-end solutions for enterprise-level clients.
Studios / Boutiques
Typically small firms comprising a tight-knit team of a few experts. They focus on a niche while outsourcing the unfamiliar (like development, content writing, or marketing) to trusted freelancers. Budgets are typically in the high five-figures to low six-figures.
Independent Freelancers
We’re the guys contracted to do the outsourced work for agencies and boutiques. We specialize in one specific skill, but lack redundancy. On the flip side, we’re extremely versatile and able to handle a wide range of budgets, especially when a bunch of us assemble to tackle a project.
What to Expect
No matter the approach, I have to get to know you during the Discovery phase, and I have to launch your website in the Deployment phase. It’s also very healthy to have a structured period of Quality Assurance before we deploy! But for agencies that only need help with development because they’re bringing their own design to the table, there’s huge cost savings to be had. And for off-the-shelf solutions, being that you cut out dev and design entirely, you benefit from the fastest and cheapest solution by giving up visual and functional flexibility.
Full Service
DiscoveryUXDDesignDevQADeploy
For clients that need their website to fully embody the brand, a full service approach enlists a visual designer to handle the user experience design and visual design phases of the project. I then convert the design into a front and back end code that makes the site functional, and we undergo a quality assurance phase that can involve content population, accessibility remediation, and extensive performance testing, depending on your scope. Full-service websites can be built in 3 to 4 months.
Dev Only
DiscoveryDevQADeploy
If you’ve already got a design on hand (e.g., a Figma template with its own style guide), then you stand to benefit by halving the project’s total fee: we no longer need to involve an outside designer, and so the focus is mostly on execution. When I white label through digital agencies, this is almost always the case, and I can be as invisible in this process as required. Dev-only websites can be built in 1 to 2 months.
Off-the-Shelf
DiscoveryConfigQADeploy
An off-the-shelf theme does not anticipate any custom development or visual design work. In the Discovery phase, we’re looking for a trustworthy, Gutenberg-compatible WordPress theme to ensure you’re forward-compatible with WordPress in general. The Discovery phase is important, because we want to find a theme that suits your brand since we have limited options to alter it beyond what the theme allows. Our search usually starts with the StudioPress family of themes. Off-the-shelf websites can be built in a few days or a couple weeks.
Insider Hosting DQuinn.net + WP Engine
WP Engine is my #1 choice when it comes to hosting websites for WordPress. This is because out of all the hosts I’ve dealt with in my 15+ years building WP sites, my experience has been that WP Engine offers the best infrastructure at the most reasonable price. But what if you could enjoy the performance of a dedicated server on WP Engine for a fraction of the cost and save on retained hours with me at the same time?

My approach in the redesign was to put the emphasis on the program’s very visual experience, as well as make it easier for the program organizers to collect applications.
