Director and Chief Curator Rachel Nelson hired me to develop the redesign for the Institute of Arts & Sciences at University of California Santa Cruz, a university art and research center that houses art exhibitions and social justice initiatives. Rachel needed to prepare a refreshed website in anticipation of the opening of the Institute’s physical gallery and make its presentation match the caliber of the work to be presented there.
I engaged Bonnie Brunner on visual design and developed the website on WordPress, taking advantage of the Gutenberg block editor to equip the Institute’s web team with tools that would allow them to construct a variety of engaging layouts without technical intervention. We made it possible for the team to calendar events in the Institute via the Events Calendar. Central to the redesign was providing the team with a robust suite of blocks for the exhibition template, so that each exhibition could be presented to the world as uniquely as the work itself.
